All You Should Know About Electricity

The world has evolved to the point that humans are enjoying comfortability by the different technological advancements in the world. Before now houses were lit with kerosene lamps, rooms were warmed by coal-burning stoves and wood burning, food was chilled in iceboxes but all this changed with the invention of the electric light bulb which was through the invention of electricity to bring indoor lighting to homes.

What is Electricity?

Electricity generation review

Electricity can be described as the flow of electrical charge or power. It is the secondary energy source which simply means that it is gotten from the conversion of other primary sources of energy which are nuclear power, oil, gas, coal, and other natural sources. So electricity isn’t natural, it is man-made. Examples of electricity are static and current electricity alongside lightning.

What is the Origin of Electricity?

The origin of electricity began with a physician named, William Gilbert who served the then Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth. Before this time the knowledge about electricity was just that lodestone has magnetic properties and when rubbing amber and jet together it will draw bits of stuff to produce sticking.

So William Gilbert and others extended the knowledge and research proved that a vacuum could exist. So making a vacuum helps for all kinds of research into electronics. So they came up with different creations. Guericke created a machine that produced static amber, Gray gave the principle of the conduction of electricity, Fay discovered electricity comes in two forms which he named vitreous + and resinous- which presently are called positive and negative terminal.

What Are the Features of Electricity?

  • It is a flow of electrical power
  • It comes in two forms: static electricity which has to do with rubbing together two or more objects and creating friction and current electricity which is about the flow of electric charge across an electrical field.
  • It is a form of energy that is used mostly to power electrical devices and power machines
  • It travels in a speed of light like more than 186,000 per second
  • It is discharge like lightning in the atmosphere
  • It can’t be stored on any scale but rather be converted to other forms of energy which then can be converted to electricity
  • It can be stored in some storage systems like pumped hydro storage, flywheel, battery, and compressed air
  • Is a secondary energy source because it comes from the conversion of other sources of energy
  • The electricity created in AC generators can’t be stored, the energy created before electricity is produced can be stored by saving the water behind the dam

What Are the Uses of Electricity?

Electricity is used in various ways and it depends on what it is needed for at a particular time. Basically electricity can be used for the following purpose:

  • It can be used for lighting
  • Can be used for both heating and cooling
  • You can use electricity for refrigeration
  • It can be useful for operating computers, appliances and electronics
  • Is needed for the operation of machinery and public transportation systems.

What Are Sources of Electricity?

The outstanding sources are: fossil fuels which are primary sources like coal, petroleum, natural gas, and then the second source is a nuclear energy source and renewable energy sources.

How Does Electricity Work?

Electricity work via putting a bunch of conductor elements together and generating a flow of electron-stealing patterns through them. This flow of pattern is known as a current. In a case like this, the conductors need to be surrounded by insulators so the electrons can only go in one direction.

Is Electricity a Light?

Yes, electricity is said to light; they are both the same thing simply because electricity is light that is guided along wires. Both can be described as a form of energy.

What Are the Elements of Electricity?

The elements of electricity can be described as the conceptual abstractions representing idealized electrical components. Therefore, all electrical networks can be said to be multiple electrical elements interconnected by wires.

Three elements needed for the electrical circuit includes the source of electrical energy, a resistance or load to use the electricity, and the conductor or wire to connect the source of the load. The components that will be needed here too are the inductors, capacitors, and the resistors.

How Does Electricity Travels and How Fast is the Speed?

A current of electricity is a steady flow of electrons that move from a place to another. When these electrons move its round a circuit, electrons carry with it a tiny amount of electric charge, so in this electrical circuit, electricity will flow one direction which is from the positive terminal of a battery and back to the negative terminal. It recorded that electricity travels at the speed of light which is about 186,000 miles per second.

How Does Electricity Work in a House?

Just like the flow of water, electricity gets into the home from the utility service lines and get out after being distributed throughout the house. Electricity flows via a network of wiring in the home and is then used by electrical devices and other light appliances. It will then exit the home by flowing to the ground again.

How Does Electricity Flow?

For electricity to flow then the circuit must be complete because current only flows when the circuit is complete and there isn’t a gap in it. So the electrons will now flow from the negative terminal connection on the power source via the connecting wires and other components like the light bulbs and back again, to the positive terminal.

How is Electricity Produced?

Electricity is mostly produced at a power plant via electromechanical generators, which are basically driven by heat engines which are generated by nuclear fission or combustion and it can be through other means too which include the kinetic energy of flowing wind and water. Other energy sources include geothermal power and photovoltaics.

How Has Electricity Been Helpful?

Electricity has been useful because it is really impacting the world, firstly by giving light to the entire world.

It helps bring comfort to humans through helping us to either heat or cool our homes, help in making us turn on our appliances and devices and for the factories, it helps power and enables us to operate large machines to make work a lot easy for workers. Electricity has helped in the creation of many media industries like the radio and television industry same as the telecommunication sector.

How Important is Electricity

Electricity is very important to the entire world’s economy because it brings economic development like investment opportunities for each country. With a good share of electricity, investors can move to a country to invest since the cost of power generation will be low unlike a country with no source of electricity. With electricity, the emission from power plants are reduced, so electricity is eco-friendly than other sources of power supply.

What Are Advantages and Disadvantages of Electricity?

One thing about electricity is that the advantages are more to the disadvantages, read below the pros and cons of electricity:

Advantages of Electricity

Electricity comes with numerous advantages and they include:

  • They are used to create magnetic fields that are used in propelling motors
  • Is silent unlike other forms of power supply, so it less noisy
  • It can be transportable over a long distance
  • Is very fast unlike others it moves at the speed of light
  • It is useful to other sources because it can be used as radio waves, light, microwaves, and radiant heat.
  • It has a low maintenance cost
  • It is renewable
  • There’s a low level of pollution unlike other means of power supply

Disadvantages of Electricity

The disadvantages of electricity are as follows:

  • It comes at high investment costs
  • It has a high construction cost
  • It can cause death if not carefully handled
  • Other dirtier forms of energy can be used for its creation
  • Humans have become over-dependent on it
  • The magnetic field around transmission lines is unhealthy.

How Was electricity Made?

Electricity is made when gas and coal are burned to heat water and then turn it into steam. This steam will be at a very high pressure which will in turn spin a turbine. The moving magnets will now cause electrons in the wires to move from a place to another producing electrical current and electricity will have been made.

Conclusion

Electricity has come to stay because of its many uses in our day to day life. We are sure of enjoying working lighting rooms, domestic appliances, and working fans and other electrical tools because of the availability of electricity. The truth is that the importance of electricity in our society can’t be overemphasized. It is really dear to us and makes living worthwhile at present.
